Three tips for making your move a smooth one

Moving homes is an exciting adventure, but also a stressful and time-consuming one. From the packing to the labelling, discarding and transporting of belongings, there’s a lot to do, and it will be demanding.

But there are ways to make it a little less so. Here are three tips for making your move go as smooth as possible.

1. Pack with a strategy in mind

We all know the best strategy is to pack your belongings according to location. Boxes labelled ‘kitchen’, ‘bedroom’ and ‘living room’ are some of the biggest players in a smooth house move.

But packing isn’t just about putting things that belong together in the same box, it’s also about time management and being efficient.

Make sure you are prepared with enough of the necessary packing materials like boxes, tape, labels and bubble wrap and start packing early enough so that you won’t be in a frenzy on move out day.

You’ll probably be less prepared than you think, so making sure to have a checklist of what you need to achieve is key.

2. Donate or sell the things you don’t need or use anymore

Less is more when moving homes. We all know that parting with your belongings is difficult, but there’s a lot you can get rid of if you’re ruthless enough.

Think about the clothes you haven’t worn all year or don’t fit. Furniture that isn’t being used. Novels or cookbooks you don’t read. Knick-knacks you’ve collected over time but don’t have a useful purpose for you anymore.

Moving presents an opportunity to evaluate what you really need, and having less stuff means transporting everything between homes will be a lot easier.

3. Hire a moving company

Save time and decrease the risk of damage by hiring professional movers. They’ve got the experience and equipment to transport everything safely, and it’s one less task for you to do.

While moving all your things on your own or with help with friends is do-able, it’s not just the drive from A to B that you must do. After you’ve finished packing, there’s also things like the loading and unloading of boxes, furniture and other big accessories you may have and the organisation of a moving truck.

Avoiding the inevitable stress is worth the additional cost.

Everyone moves, and everyone does it differently. But there are some hacks that are universally helpful to make life during the move less stressful.

By creating a strategy, donating or selling your belongings and hiring a moving company, your move will be a breeze.
