Three ways to get to know your neighbours after you move in

The idea of putting yourself out there and meeting new people is nerve-wracking. But apartment living means you’ll be bumping into your neighbours often, so it’s a good idea to become friendly with them from the get-go.

Being neighbourly doesn’t take up too much of your time, and the rewards for putting in the effort will make life in your apartment more exciting.

Here are three ways you can meet your neighbours and start building relationships with them.

1. Start a club

The best way to get to know your neighbours is to start a club that encourages social interaction.

Being part of a club is a tried-and-true way of meeting new people, as they offer the opportunity to pursue your hobbies and meet others with the same interests.

Clubs such as book clubs, run clubs and arts and crafts clubs are some popular activities that will help get you and your neighbours together to socialise and have some fun.

2. Spend time in shared spaces

If you feel brave enough, try striking up a conversation with the people who are hanging out in the shared spaces of your apartment building.

Whether you’re going for a workout at the gym or lounging on the rooftop garden, find a way to introduce yourself as a tenant of the building.

Most people like talking about themselves once they get started, so the chances of you successfully initiating an introductory conversation and learning about those living around you are high.

3. Knock on doors

Self-introductions can feel scary, but it’s a great way to get to know someone. Being neighbourly means knowing information like your next-door neighbour’s name, what they do and how they like to spend their free time.

We’ve all experienced times where you’ve been in the same space as someone you’ve seen around the area but have never introduced yourself to so all you can give is an awkward head nod or an uncomfortable smile.

Avoid all this by knocking on their door to say hi and introducing yourself soon after you move in. It is sure to be well-received, and the next time you see them, you’ll be able to give a friendly wave and have a chat.

Actively deciding to meet new people is something that you either love to do or find is way out of your comfort zone. But it’s something that you’re going to have to do if you live in an apartment building.

Bumping into your neighbours is inevitable, so to make meeting and socialising with them easier, it’s a great idea to either start a club, spend time in shared spaces or knock on doors and introduce yourself. And if you’re feeling especially social, why not do all three?!
