How to prepare for an apartment walkthrough
Having a walkthrough of the apartment you’re considering purchasing is an essential part of the buying process.
Meeting with the sales agent and walking through each room is an opportunity for you to inspect the appliances, utilities, and the general condition of the apartment.
Here are three ways to prepare for your apartment walkthrough.
1. Bring a checklist
It can be easy to forget what you want to do or see during a walkthrough. You may get overwhelmed with the amount of space you need to look at, or you may be bound by time constraints.
A checklist will help you to remember everything you want to inspect, so that nothing is forgotten. Some of the main items to check off include testing the following: kitchen appliances; functionality of cabinets, wardrobes and drawers; water pressure and drainage of sinks and the shower; and the locks of windows and doors.
2. Write down all the questions you want to ask
Like the checklist, it’s easy to forget what exactly you want to know so that you feel confident about your decision to buy the apartment you’re looking at.
Questions could be about the brand and functionality of appliances, utilities and amenities; what the body corporate fee covers; and who to contact if you have a question or issue in the future.
No question is too difficult or too simple, it’s better to have all your questions answered so you have some peace of mind.
3. Bring tools for recording information
Having a few different tools, such as a notebook, torch, measuring tape and a camera (or your smartphone), to write down or record the details you want to remember are great to have on hand during your walkthrough.
Bring a notebook to write any small details, the torch can be used to check areas with low light, the measuring tape is to make sure the furniture you want to put in will fit, and the camera is for documenting the condition of the apartment.
With a walkthrough being an important step on your way to homeownership, being prepared for it is crucial. Bringing a checklist, asking questions, and bringing a variety of tools to record all the details are just some of the great ways to feel prepared for the walkthrough step.
