How to declutter and organise your apartment in just a few weekends

Clutter and disorganisation in the house are enemies many people often encounter, and if you don’t deal with them regularly, they can become a problem.

You end up having a lot of things you don’t actually need, and a lack of free space.

Apartments are already a relatively small space, so taking care of the extra stuff lying around is something all apartment-dwellers should do every now and again.

Here are four space-saving steps you can take over a few weekends to make your place clutter-free and organised.

Weekend one: Declutter

Go through places like your wardrobe, cupboards, desk, and storage drawers or boxes to find items that have just been sitting there for months on end and no longer serve a purpose.

Pick up the stuff that has been sitting on the floor, tidy up the items that are piling up on your desk; gather things like clothes that you haven’t worn for a while because they don’t fit or suit your style anymore; pens that have run out of ink and notebooks that are full; accessories you don’t wear; and other gizmos and gadgets that you hardly ever use.

Some of your possessions might have sentimental value, but a lot probably don’t – and those are the ones that are taking up your precious space, and you need to get rid of.

The less clutter you have, the freer you’ll feel.

Weekend two: Donate or sell

One person’s trash is another person’s treasure. Items that are still in good condition can be donated to charity shops, thrift stores, or sold on an online marketplace.

Research and visit your local second-hand stores to see what they’re in need of – things they usually like to receive include clothes, shoes, bags, books and sets of dishes like bowls and plates.

For the bigger things that the stores can’t take, try your luck on sites such as Facebook Marketplace or Trade Me. Or, do it the old-fashioned way, with a garage sale.

Weekend three: Organise your space

Now that you’ve gotten everything you don’t need out of your home, it’s time to reorganise what you do have.

Reorganising can be a lot of effort, so make things easier by implementing a sorting system that makes sense to you.

Whether it’s using labels; allocating each corner of the room to a specific group of items; or writing a list of things you have and where they should go, having a plan will help make your day less hectic.

Weekend four: Prevent

Now that your things have been donated, sold, and organised, it’s time to plan how to keep the clutter out.

Whether you just don’t go shopping for clothes or accessories for a year; get rid of something old when you buy something new; or do a clean of the entire apartment every few months, having a routine to keep your apartment decluttered will make you feel better and your space looking good.

It’s difficult to let go of the things you own – but if you go through the steps of decluttering, donating or selling your unnecessary belongings, and having a big clean out every now and again, you’ll soon get into the habit of living a life that’s mess-free, and wonder why you didn’t start sooner!
